SHINE: Education. Engagement. Partnership.

About

SHINE: Education. Engagement. Partnership. is Emory's premier engagement program with the refugee, immigrant, and new American communities in metro Atlanta.

SHINE's mission is to connect the Emory community with Atlanta-area organizations serving refugees, immigrants, and new Americans. In addition, SHINE organizes educational and celebratory events to foster understanding, creative collaboration, and polycultural competence among all members of the Emory community.

Our partners this Spring 2023 semester include Catholic Charities of Atlanta, the Clarkston Community Center, LaAmistad, Global Village Project, the IRC, and the International Community School (ICS).

Catholic Charities of Atlanta (in-person) provides Adult Education Services assists immigrants and refugees who seek to improve their English language skills and/or prepare for naturalization. They do this through English/Civics and Citizenship classes. They also offer a Clarkston based Aferschool program.

Clarkston Community Center (in-person) works to connect Atlanta's communities and cultures through education, recreation, and the arts. The Center a full range of community programs including a teen after-school program and thriving summer camps. SHINE volunteers will support the in-person after-school program and interact with teenagers from diverse backgrounds who attend Clarkston area schools. They have devised strict COVID protocols to enable their K-12 students to learn and catch-up after long months of virtual learning at the Center and take advantage of the resources present there. Students with whom they work have fallen behind during the pandemic and intensive small group work is needed to support their learning and success.

International Community School (in-person) is back!Their Kilometer Kids running program is looking for volunteers to assist coach Dawn in getting the kids excited for physical activity and to mentor them as they bond as a team.

LaAmistad (in-person) has worked with Volunteer Emory in the past and is looking for sup[port in their after-school program. Join LaAmistad as a tutor and engage with refugee, immigrant, and new American youth on a weekly basis.

The IRC (in-person & online). We have partnered with the International Rescue Committee in the past and they are back on the roster after a COVID hiatus. We have two different opportunities: supporting their adult ESL program, including their childcare offerings that enable parents to attend and they Youth Futures Clarkston based after school program.

Global Village Project (in-person) is a non-profit school for refugee girls age 11-18. GVP is a new SHINE community partner and we look forward to working with them this semester!
